Best part is, the use case you stated for the 5e version was already redundant since you can look through your familiar's eyes as per Find Familiar's description

If you must nerf it as a dm, you could break the invisibility, force the rogue to do the m/v/s components or enforce direct line of sight / no fill cover in your direction

That’s why I love it so much with a imp familiar and just having a flying invisible turret.
Technically going by pure raw YOU don’t have the invisible condition so no advantage but still super cool.

That's the perfect setup for a +error attack. Convince sb, that you should be able to use gaze of two minds on them, to listen to their upcoming conversation with the king. Cast fireball on the king in close range - kill the king and the suspected "attacker" in one smooth action. It's the perfect crime

It definitely wasn't useless. If you're trying to get into a heavily guarded location you can watch through the guard's eyes and find interior weaknesses.

I did actually use old Gaze of Two Minds on my latest warlock.
I was playing a slime (because my dm was chill like that-), and, well, slimes dont have eyes.
I didnt use Gaze of two minds much, but it got the most use when it allowed my blind character to see the final boss who was flying outside of my blindsight range

Final boss, aarakokra rogue archer with bunch of paralysis poisons.
Me, a master planner.
I use gaze of two minds on one of my allies, allowing me to, next turn, hex the boss and target strength checks and dimension door up on top of them using my cape of the mountebank. Now, one of my slime abilities meant if someone touched me, they'd have to basically make a strength check or essentially get "grappled". Now, I'm up here, stuck to the wings of this byird archer 70 ft in the air, and well.
He falls.
Boss was beaten shortly after.
Lets just say, dm was not expecting that.

And it was all possible because i could give my slime some eyes :)

Lets just say.
This is really cool.
Personally my ruling likely would end up something like below.

If any of the monsters/enemies have training in arcana.
They might not know the specific square the spell came from.
But they, after a first or second turn.
Will know a general direction+ possibly a 20ft square.
Its great in some scenarios but could still get the rouge killed.
Absolutely best for invisible disposable creatures.

Plus if the rogue has the Soulknife subclass, they can use Psychic Whispers on you so you can talk as well

Funny story, the 5e version was even weaker than most people think it was, because the ability specifies “a willing humanoid”, not “creature”… so it’s not even useful with animal friends, it literally just lets you look through another Person’s eyes.

I imagine casting this on a cute little cat, and when the enemy is going “awww” at the cat, it just opens its mouth and casts Evard’s Black Tentacles terrifying everyone

I can't wait for a monk to grapple the hasted barbarian that has been touched by Gaze of two minds, throw him at mach10 and it just starts meleeing everyone while apparently exploding fireballs from his body
