I use PRS Archon head through two identical Marshall 2x12 hand wired cabs one with two 8ohm Celestion Hertige speakers wired at 16ohms and one with two 16 ohm Celestion Hertige speakers wired at 8 ohms. I play a rhythm and a lead to see if they sound different.

Here are some other cool products from a dealer I trust and buy from online

I think you meant 2x16ohm wired *parallel* equals 8ohms. wired in series would have made 32 ohms.

16 ohm definitely smoother and less shrill.

2:00 for the 8 ohms
3:00 for the 16 ohms

Anyway... those Heritage sound awesome.

I'm shocked that I can hear this much difference in the video. There is such a difference that it seems like it must be attributed to something other than ohms. Thanks for the video.

The information that's missing in this video is which ohm output was the PRS Archon head using for each of the clips.

Both nice. 16 is more saturated.
Nice sounds, nice playing 👍

To me, the second loop sounded better. It was the 16 Ohms version. sounded a little bit louder and crispier.

They both sounded like my computer speakers =]

in a tube amp with 4 8 16 output plugs or selector
you are also using the different
4 8 16 coils from your output transformer

so it will sound different anyway

Did you change the impedance selector on the amplifier from 8 ohms to 16 ohms, too?

The only difference (if there are any) rests upon the tube amplifier: To drive a 16 ohm load, the secondary is used in full. If set to 8 or 4 ohms, only a tap (a part) of the secondary is used, to match the tubes to the speakers. If the amp is solid state, less ohms in the speaker setup means less resistance, thus more energy flow, so the result will be louder and the amp will run hotter. In solid state, that is. In a tube amp, you could only see any difference by changing the speaker wiring but keeping the amp locked in a particular setting (4, 8 or 16ohms).

I think the tonal difference comes from wiring the cabinet a in series verses parallel not the resulting impedance.

So, the first is the one with the 16ohm speakers wired in 8ohms and the second one is the one with the 8ohm soeakers wired in 16ohms, right? Did you switch the output ohm selector in the according to the cab you used? Mic position and all the settings were the same? Thanks!

Phil, I love your stuff, I'm changing the preamp tubes on my Marshall DSL40c and I noticed the 3 "loudspeakers" jacks on the back panel. it's been on 16 ohm, since I bought it.
Am I correct is assuming ...the other two 8 ohm jacks are for external speakers,
and the single stock speaker should be plugged into 16 all the time?
Also..
My amp has a very subtle high pitched whistle, like faint high feedback, only when the gain is up or treble... when I lower stuff, it goes away, I assumed this was a blown preamp tube? I bought a set of all four ax7's just in case I need them, does this sound like a typical symptom of a bad tube? I figure it wouldn't hurt putting new JJs in there anyway, the amps is 2-3 yrs old now.. I'm about to try, I've got the amp opened up..figured I'd ask the Guru McKnight about it.
Sound like it's a tube?

So, I'm back 3 years later refreshing my understanding of speakers, ohms, cabinets, , x2 , and ohms. Thanks Phil Not much info here but good to see your smiling face... think this is the last day of NAMM 2019.

I can't understand, 8ohm vs 16ohm means each speaker 8ohm and 16ohm or cabinet with two speakers? What do you mean?

Interesting...but confusion abounds from this demo

16 ohms total impedance seems to sound better

was the ohm switch correctly switched?

what speakers wired what way to achieve different ohmage?

THANKS

8 ohms sounds faster/more jumpy dynamics and has more sizzly tops, and 16 is kinda creamier and saggier/spongier?

Great to see someone take the time to put this video together. Thanks so much!
