ZEIBEKIKO OF AIVALI

Greek Beat Dance Production. Enmore Theatre (2006)

Before the zeibekiko evolved into a personal solo dance, it was danced quite differently in the early 1900's. It's origins are traced back to villages in Asia Minor where warriors called 'zeybeks' would dance in rhythm with little improvisation,depending on region,all in simulation of a hawk.Only the neighbouring islands in Greece were familiar with this form until it was introduced to mainland Greece after the Asia Minor tragedy in 1922.
