Just ended up here while looking for ovni sailboats. I wonder why orcas in the last decade started attacking sailboats in perticular?
Because they know they can do damage to plywood and polyester rudders? Or is it something more complex like vibration or something we don't understand? Also curious why only some pods do this and others don't even mind boats... Marine biologist have got some investigating to do.

I met an other Ovni skipper who had used black and white anti fouling to paint the hull so that it looked like an Orca. He didn’t know if it would have prevented an interaction as they didn’t meet any Orca on their passage through the Straits, but it was an interesting idea.

Leaving in New Zealand, we have lots of orcas but I have not heard about orcas attacking boats down under, maybe it comes down to the number of fishing boats there are in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. I guess they are competing for food and the fishing boats are not helping their survival. I don't see what else it could be but I like that you did not try to interact with them, I think what you did is the best course of action providing you are safer in an aluminium boat than if it was fiberglass most definitely.

Out of curiosity, have you been to the Arctic circle with this sailboat, North of Norway or closer to Alaska with your Ovni? Which Ovni is this, is that the 430? I really would like to know how far they can be pushed and how much they can resist. I know that Bestevaer sailboats have to be upgraded to increase their structural resistance but the interior design on both 36 and 45 is atrocious compared to the Ovni and Boreal equivalents. The pilot house is not a pilot house, there is no possibility of storage nor workshop. It is a shame because their exterior is very well designed granted the Dutch are far more narrow than the French aluminium boats, hence the lack of space. I would like to see these boats in Arctic or Antarctic conditions really because the claim that it can sail there out of the box seems a bit misleading to me, just maybe.

Its not being attacked, Orca's just playing around and are curious. Typical Orca behaviour
