Trump Tariffs: Economic Team Smelling the Coffee, Nigeria Must Revise 2025 Budget - Alaje

If crude prices drop to $40, Nigeria will not survive it. To mitigate this, the inflation target of 15% needs to be reassessed in line with global realities. Revenue targets should also be adjusted, considering the shift in oil price assumptions. To overcome this economic downturn, Nigeria must prioritise manufacturing.

Paul Alaje, Economist

The real rate of Nigeria inflation is NOT 24%. The methodology used to arrive at this figure is so flawed. Even the Fed Govt doesn't agree with the figure, hence the CBN interest rate is still in excess of 30%. The government knows that 24% is not a fair hedge on the real rate of inflation in Nigeria today.

Nigeria problem is that their leaders have wasted many years fighting among themselves, both during the military and the civilian government. These leaders are more concerned in hijacking the apparatus of state and the control of Nigeria finances mostly from oil revenue. Nigerian has no good infrastructures like good roads, electricity supply , healthy drinking water, and health care. good education, and security. Nigeria has not even protected their Natural resouces and intellectual talents and other Countries have takent these Nigerian talents for free. So when incidents like covid and the Trump tariffs comes along, Nigeria leaders have no substantial solid plans to withstand these incidences and they only concern is fear of the oil sector been affected.

Whlie Countries like Nigeria may not have the industrilization of the USA or China. Nigeria has things these countries do not have. Besides oil, Nigeria has international acclaimed and talented movie, music and fashion industry, if protected and monetized could earn Nigeria billion of Dollars. Rare Tropical herbs and flowers, coffee, cocoa, palm produce and various Tropical agricultural products, Cultural tourism as was witnessed in the last dirty December in Nigeria. Nigerian music and intellectual talents has been exploited and taken for free by other countries. Nigeria is one those English speaking countries that train thousands of Doctors and health professionals but these Nigerians and other professionals like them are being exploited for low paying jobs in other countries around the world. American wealth has not come alone from Manufacturing. America also built its wealth from services and entertainment industries. Music, films, fashion, banking , insurance, and other financial service industries. The Trump Tariffs may be a wake-up call for Countries like Nigeria to start getting their house together.

the question raised around 12:31, From US perspective, reducing deficit is possible. very possible. In 2023 China had a trade surplus in 150 out of 181 countries(i dont have 2024 data but one can expect that it is around that number too, possibly much more). In 2024 US has trade deficit with 100 countries, China have a trade surplus with almost all of these 100 countries.
Most countries of the world sell much more to the US than China. Conversely most countries of the world buy much more from China than they buy from the US. This is what US wants to adjust a little bit, how can I be the customer that buys most of your product, but when its your own time to buy you have another favorite person(my competitor) you buy from. Era of Big Brother America is over. US is doing let me pity these small children, while China is crushing the children and becoming more powerful. Now US is simply saying since y'all children dont mind being crushed, i will take my fair share of the dominance.

I don't like the way these interviewers interrupt the flow of thought of the people they're interviewing.
It is annoying.
