Thank you for the review. My only concern with your cleaning regimen is that adding Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) will increase the pH of your compost pile, which can throw off the decomposition process. Of course, if your pile is too acidic this might actually help but it shouldn't be unless you're throwing in acidic foods (e.g. orange or lemon rinds). People generally avoid them for this reason. Just something to consider.

Great review! Is your oxo bin size .75 gallon?

Thank you for the review. Your opinions are very helpful. What might be important to one person might not be for everyone but it’s good to have this info

In fact this review caused me to seriously consider buying a Polder bin, although I don't think it looks better than the OXO. But it's too big and expensive for my needs. Was it completely straightforward for you to return it, because I don't think you could have said it's faulty? I felt the central handle is OK, and I've seen a photo which implies that it's designed to be able to clip over the side.

For anyone else considering the Polder, I'd say don't do it for a couple of reasons. 1. The lid doesn't seal in any way, it just kind of sits on top and doesn't clip in or anything. 2. The most important, because of silicone's habit of picking up smells, this bin smells so badly like compost after a month that I can't even bear to have it in my kitchen. I haven't left the compost in there that long, but this thing just absorbs and then emanates odours to a ridiculous degree. Seriously, I've had to remove it from my house, it's gross, and washing with detergent makes no difference.

Does the interior part of the Oxo (green) come out of the outer bin (white) for cleaning?
