Fun fact! If u see a Hello Kitty with the bow on the other side its actually her twin sister Mimmy White. She was actually my favourite Hello Kitty character as a child and it makes me kinda sad people dont know she exists.

Yuko Shimizu, the creator of the character, designed it as a little girl who wears a cat head mask. Sanrio, the company the character was made for, weren't keen on that, so they dropped that part of it. As far as Yuko was concerned, she continued to draw the character as a human (and confirmed it in an interview about 10 years ago) but Sanrio marketed it as a cat since 1974. For some reason, the current CEO of Sanrio has recently revealed the human background and broken everybody's brains!!!

And her sister has the bow on the opposite ear, so technically you have made MIMI KITTY! However both characters are little girls! MiMi is a pseudonym for the word SiSTeR.

Japanese character illustration for manga and marketing has distinct terms for all these categories! It’s pretty fascinating! There’s an animal or even inanimate objects depicted as a human, usually female form (Hello Kitty/Kitty White’s category hijinka moe) vs a hybrid human animal character (Juujin) vs animal with faint human traits (kemono) vs human with animal ears and maybe tail (kemonomimi which literally means “cat ears”).

I remember that in Rupaul's drag race there was a challenge brought by hello kitty where they explained that she was not a cat but she was dressed as one

In the challenge the queens also had to recreate their own hello kitty's character so that made it pretty clear to me
