"You have to be passionate about your story!" That's a very important statement Peter made and it gets to the point of quality over quantity. You have to slow down, gather your emotions, know the human condition intimately, and write what matters to you because if you aren't convinced it's the best thing you ever written it is unlikely anyone in a position to sell your script will believe it either. Writing a bunch of scripts is cool but if you get caught in the numbers game you will lose your enthusiasm and only be about the big checks your scripts can sell for. Making each story personally matter to you is the key to writing scripts that are powerful and that make sense (are written with structure) but that also move (activate emotions in) producers, agents, and managers who can unlock the doors to getting your scripts made into films. It's a long gradual process so patience and enthusiasm for your stories is the key to enduring the grind while waiting for those future paydays. =)

I believe this is the better professional career on planet. Getting paid for making stories you are passionate about.

I like this guy, I'm working on a historical movie script and the amount of research, structuring each scene and deciding how the events will flow through. It's a project that you have to do and then leave every once in a while to plan it out but you need the passion to carry on doing it til it is finished.

This happened to me in college i wrote a screenplay for a 10 minute play festival and everyone fought over it. I hope to make new storys that have the charm of storys i grew up with.

I found this advice invaluable not only for writing but also my other hobbies. On introspection, I can write stories, but as with much of life I find it highly derivative: I have the ability to write; but I don't love it. I was drawn to this video based on its run length; and I thank all involved in its production, if not especially the interviewee for his honesty and directness.

YES!  Thank YOU Peter. Love YOU Film Courage!!!  In my experience I'm still rewriting my favorite script since 2008. And yes I've been writing others, four so far. So Peter is right 150%

It's very true. Rewrites are a given, and they even happen while shooting.

The true love for my first screenplay is definitely there. Persistence is my best friend. I stay up until 2am working on outline and focusing on learning the craft. My confidence is building.
Being told I suck is expected. Also, been told I have thick skin. My progress is noticeable and that alone is huge for me.

What gets on my nerves is that movies like “Sharknado” can be made, while struggling writers who can write better stories have to be told that “Your script isn’t good enough”

I wish I would have seen this when I started because I had unrealistic expectations about how quickly I was going to finish my 1st screenplay.

I wonder if the reason why she laughed about it was the fact that because the critics were tearing it apart was a sign that they actually invested in the story and that their was an audience who attended the film. If you have an audience, you have a film.
