Before there were locks in South Australia the water was high in winter and low in summer.  Towns on the river Murray from Mildura down into South Australia were started by the Chaffey brothers starting irrigation setttlements for growing food.  As the settlements got bigger there as a need for a more constant flow of water. (most food crops are grown in spring/summer months)  If you have no water you have no crop.  I agree that there is a massive waste of water on 'environmental' flows,  plus the fact our SA government spent billions of dollars of dollars on a water de-sal plant that they worked out afterwards was too expensive to run and is basically rusting in the sea.  Please don't hurt our famers because of the waste of our politicians and 'others'.  The federal government needs to take control of the entire river system as the separate states are only going to look at what is best for there state.

Every part of the Murray Darling system has an impoundment of some kind the two biggest being Lake Hume and Dartmouth. With thses structures and the change in flood cycles has impacted the ecosystem immensely.

I agree about getting rid of barrages and diverting the South east water into the Coorong but..., Doesn’t he know that at least 80% of Adelaide’s water supply comes from the Murray? The greed of the other states often stops the water ever getting to the sea and seriously effects Adelaides water security. Even if the barrages where removed, without sufficient occasional fresh water flush out you will end up with a dead hyper saline environment Like the Coorong is currently.

Labelling ALL South Australians as hippocritical is grossly unfair. Just lost a supporter for your rant.
