How do I avoid or get rid of the drips that occur at the bottom edge of the canvas? I tried painters tape but it just becomes part of the problem.

Do you really feel that this is the most inexpensive way to varnish your art? Resin is very expensive so I'm not quite sure what you are saying here? 🤔
