The placebo effect refers to the phenomena an individual experiences when they believe they are receiving a medical treatment and have a perceived or real improvement in their symptoms, despite no actual treatment. This effect is well documented throughout medicine as a real phenomenon.

The cause of the placebo effect is not understood at this time. Classical conditioning and the expectancy effect have been proposed as potential causes of it.

Often times, this is used when testing a new medication by comparing it to a "sugar pill", otherwise known as a placebo.

However, it can be applied to many other areas including sham "touch", sham surgeries and other aspects of everyday life. This effect can have powerful influences on your health and physiology despite being a matter of perception.

Studies have shown that placebo caffeine can actually improve physical activity, alertness, and cognitive functioning. These effects were also demonstrated in individuals who were sleep deprived and consumed placebo caffeine.

Sleep deprivation is a common concern among adults. Effects of sleep deprivation include decreased performance and alertness, impaired memory and cognitive functioning, stressed relationships, decreased quality of life, and increased risk of injury at work and while driving.
