Four Great Tit chicks found themselves in a perilous situation when a Woodpecker found their nest. Both parents were out gathering food when this unruly intruder started chipping away at the box and getting very close to the tiny chicks.

Only three days after hatching, a Woodpecker found this nest and started chipping away at it with its powerful beak. The incident happened while both parents were looking for food. It’s not unusual for chicks to be left alone for short periods. However, this predator seized the opportunity to take advantage of this cheap meal. It spent three minutes attempting to get inside, creating a sizeable hole in the wooden box. One of the parents returned shortly after and chased the Woodpecker away. A few days later, it returned for another attempt. It was chased away again. This was the last time the Woodpecker was seen. The story ends happily, with all four chicks fledging fifteen days later. A lucky escape, to say the least!

It’s not uncommon to see Woodpeckers predate nests like this, as they will likely have chicks of their own to feed. Their diet typically consists of insects, larvae, spiders and seeds, but they will predate the nests of other birds to feed their own.
