Pianist, author, composer, and landscape architect Jeremy Siskind talks about jazz chords where the chord symbols don't tell the whole story. Beware...it may get spooky!

There is a lot of useful information in this video. Definitely worth watching and re-watching to pick up all of the hidden properties! e.g. The C- chord "masquerading" as a triad in the Real Book.

Thanks Jeremy! As usual, so interesting to get your take on some of my favorite things to think about. This time, i learned my "bad form" of thinking V7+ in minor and flat 7 with C-. I agree with you in both cases and stand corrected, but i've now got decades of bad habits to correct! (and that's just piano habits, let's not even think about dietary or social habits - egad!) 😅
Love you man !!! (phantom indeed)

I make sure to write (omit9) on my iii chords in major and ii chords in melodic minor!

Nice! Looking at your books, trying to figure out which format is most sensible. Have the bugs been worked out in all three? (Erm, errata…)

I think one of my fav is using a line cliche on a ii or vi in a major key, or the classic on the i in a minor key.

Also, I would include the ii half diminished and bVImaj7#11 with the iv and bVII7. They all share the b6 relative to the major I resolution that usually comes after.

Can't say much about the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical but Fred Hersch's 'Phantom of the Bopera' is both a quality song and quality song name.

Interesting and informative as always but I'm thinking of those 3 brothers Groucho, Chico and Harpo and their night at the opera rather than that old phantom! LOL

Strange, most of these things i was already doing intuitively. Must just sound nicer to many of our ears.

I feel it’s good to point out that if you choose to play melodic minor / Lydian dominant over the back door dominant, the minor chord must be a 6th, not a 7th. F-7 is not found in F melodic minor.

Btw if i accept the form of writing the V7 in a minor key with a flat 13 does that mean i can also accept a natural 5 lower down in the voicing (would seem to imply yes) ... i've not been able to get that to sound right so far, not giving up yet
