I normally make content on Korean coins in Korean, but decided to make an English version of this video because it really applies to every new collector. There are many mistakes we make while collecting coins: cleaning them, scratching them, not storing them correctly... But this video is five mistakes that I made myself that I feel every new collector should know. Rather than tell you how to collect coins, we are going to talk about not messing up your coin collection while you have it.

Nice, thanks for the tip. Doing an exchange in Korea and started collecting (korean) coins 3 months ago.

The irony is it has been known that some of the grading agencies and auction houses have done light cleaning of some of their coins - a touch of acetone, then a soak in very mild soap and diluted or spring water briefly. Then pat dry lightly.
There is a risk of course they may be devalued for the cleaning (basically with the acetone which is called "coin dipping") but I think there are exceptions when you have to do it --- PVC damage which puts a slight greenish haze on coins from a few decades ago that were housed in PVC plastic holder. Another case is a circulated coin of very high mintage and no errors which you could do this to get rid of some haze from water exposure and remove some very ingrained dirt. Finally I have done this to a few silver coins - two common commemorative ones and one ASE (not a particularly rare) to lessen the water spot on it and some bad smearing from someone mishandling it with dirty hands. Overall though I do my best NOT to do this (again the only case where I may do it a little more is very common circulated coins with no errors)
As for mistakes I did buy a bit too much in the first few months as a collector as I tried to figure where to focus my efforts. Another was a case where the US Mint provided some nice bonus coins in a plastic pouch holder that made them looked scratched . I found when looking at it and when trying to determine where the scratches I actually scratched the coin (and a Proof one!) overly confident the plastic would be sufficient protection. I learned that any loose coins or coins in flips/plastic pouches you want to keep for a long time in good condition, you should put in a coin capsule! My favorites are Airtites and Lighthouse brands here in the US.
