As a Vietnamese, I share the same feeling that Indonesian brothers endured during post WW2 struggle for their real independence. In 1945, the French and British came to retake their colonies in SEA. During 9 years war for our real independence, French brutality cannot be whitewashed in any kind. Indonesian and Vietnamese we are friends in same struggle.

Counter insurgency (or insurgency, depending on what side you're on) will always make the best material for war movies, especially anti war ones.

My Opa's family lived in Indonesia for the better part of 200 years. He fought the Japanese during WWII, fled to Australia and then joined the US Marines (was a Royal Dutch Marine prior). He was in his 30's through WWII. My Oma was captured and spend 4 years in a camp. She survived, and after the war when my father was born my Opa fought in this conflict as well. He was Indo, 1/2 dutch. My Oma was 100% dutch. They left when my father was a toddler, but only spent a few years in the Netherlands as it was in rough shape after WWII. They came to Canada when my father was 5. My grandfather was a bit of an asshole in real life. The last time I saw him was when I was 9 (I'm middle aged now). He was an alcoholic and a violent man when he was angry. He had killed people and I know those years of fighting broke something in him. I think fighting for him was different as well as he felt Indonesia was his home that he lost. That doesn't condone any of the things done throughout the years to the Indonesian people, but it's more awkward when you're related to them. In Canada I grew up seeing pictures of my grandparents old home, and eating rijsttafel on Sunday evenings. I'm only 1/8 Indo but I still feel like it's a home I've never been to. I'm definitely going to watch this movie, and I would love to visit Indonesia someday.

Indonesia was occupied by the Japanese navy during world war 2 and was subjected to the most brutal occupation. This provided a textbook example of how the Indonesian could respond to the return of the colony. People who want to read into the last 700 years of Indonesia will find a book by MC Recklefs 'a history of modern Indonesia since 1300' a worthwhile read.

Interesting movie. Dutch colonialism history is probably not a popular topic in Holland. But it’s good they’re making a movie about Indonesia’s fight for independence against the Dutch.

After the Japanese surrendered to the allies, the Indonesian saw this chance to proclaim independence in 17 August, 1945. The Dutch, with the help of their allies, tries to reclaim Indonesia as their colonial territories and denied the Indonesian independence. Judging from the trailer, this looks like focused on Raymond "The Turk" Westerling campaign in the province of South Sulawesi to counter the insurgency of the so-called "terrorist." His brutal campaign in South Sulawesi known as "Westerling Massacre" here in Indonesia as he and his army act as judge, jury, and executioner during the campaign. Although it is probably controversial, as an Indonesian I'm interested to see Dutch armies view during the campaign.

0:57 Curious if the filmmakers knew this when including the shot but that's a unique and mysterious natural phenomenon called crown shyness. To this day scientists aren't sure why some trees will avoid touching branches like that.

Always cool to see lesser known theatres and periods of history and involving other nations from the usual major powers. Looks like worth checking out!

Found this by accident on a streaming service and it did not disappoint. The character development was strong, the action sequences were nice, and the ending was phenomenal.

Actually, we Indonesians are trying not to blame this bitter memory anymore, but yes, it's a bit more difficult, actually than being called a grudge, it's like an upset.

Looks interesting, I’m not aware of any other film covering this time/place.

I once see an interview of Dutch Soldier that were sent at that time, he said "When Nazi german invade holland, they striped dutch people from their honor, dignity and freedom and Saw my brother being beaten by german soldiers for insurgent information. Now, i'm doing the same to Indonesian as the Nazi German did to my brother. Arewe doing the right thing? Being sent here? God help me"

The first thing the Dutch did after being liberating and receiving aid from the Marshall plan was to set out to reconquer their colonies. France did the same thing in Indochina, which eventually turned into the Vietnam war as Charles De Gaulle threatened the United States that he would ally with the USSR unless the US helped the French in Indochina.

Domino theory is neo-colonialism.

My grandfather fought at the Battle of Surabaya and was under the command of Sutomo. Ended up as a Major. Also wanted to re-enlist to be involved with Operation Trikora but was convinced otherwise to be a father. They had 7 children.

He became a businessman and then found God, where he became a missionary.

War didn't end in 45, it was just on a smaller scale.

Look forward to seeing this. There are not many western movie which cover Indonesia’s history of struggle for independence from the Dutch. Hopefully this will be a good one in raising a bit of awareness on how the Dutch committed atrocities to us Indonesian.

The Dutch declared war because Indonesia had stolen the letter R from them.
