At least 36 people have died in the Lahaina fire in Hawaii, Maui County wrote in a statement posted to the county website Wednesday evening.

Wildfires, whipped by strong winds from Hurricane Dora passing far to the south, took the island of Maui by surprise, leaving behind burned-out cars on once busy streets and smoking piles of rubble where historic buildings had stood. Flames roared throughout the night, forcing adults and children to dive into the ocean for safety.

MEMO: if I ever move to Hawaii, or somewhere in California, build a tree house. Trees house seem to be immunized by wild fires. Also...D.E.W. can't attack trees.

Many condolences to those who lost a loved one and sending many positive prayers to anyone who las lost their homes. Before rebuilding, Maui homeowners may want to learn from the 1993 Laguna Beach fire where only one home in Mystic Hill was the only left untouched by it—-was spared due to its construction and landscape design. The house featured double-pained glass which helps keep heat from igniting the draperies inside the house, a tile roof sealed with concrete on the ends to keep sparks out, and stuccoed eves to hide any exposed wood. Landscaping zones of fire resistant plants also helped. Many external materials are made of fire retardant materials as well.

The historic Banyan tree is no longer. Our thoughts and prayers for those who lost their lives. Lahaina was my second home away from home. It’s devastating to watch this footage. Aloha ~ ❤️🌈
