This was the second painting during the 2016 Opus Outdoor Painting Challenge. This gnarly tree to was to good to pass up. The intent was to add as much color and temperature variation as possible into the three.

Hey Michael! I do the same thing often with my phone. I’m not a purest when it comes to all that and actually think embracing the technology we have at our fingertips really helps. I often convert that photo to B&W so I can see the values.
I guess it comes down to time. I rarely feel like I have the time to sit down and make multiple sketches and value studies before beginning the painting process.
Really enjoy the colors in that tree!

Very nice...I love your style..great idea with cropping the composition..I don't understand it..if I was doing a 9/12...how could I crop it on phone? Thanks for your time...really enjoyed this...
