As a man who just hit 50, there is so much truth in this song. I don't know why more parents don't instill this in their children. I know mine didn't. The line "When you get older your wild heart will live for younger days" is very, very true. As I hit my late 40's and then just 50, you really do get very nostalgic and you long to do the things you never did when you were young. And I consider myself very fortunate. I travelled much of the US and the world as a late teen and in my early 20's. I travelled the back roads and towns of countries large and small. I sailed the oceans and seas all around the pacific. I swam with the dolphins at sunset off of Diamond Head in Hawaii...I swam with the tiger sharks in South East Asia. I dove the hulking ghosts of World War II off the Marianas Trench. I've fought in martial arts tournaments(and mostly gotten fucked up) across the US and in Asian. I fought with and drank with Russian merchant sailors in the back alleys of Korea. I sang drunken Karaoke with Japanese business men in Okinawa. I ran afoul of German thieves who slipped me knock out drug and I barely escaped with my my money (or worse, my kidneys) when I had just enough consciousness to whisper to my buddy "you need to watch my back and get me out of here safely..." I got drunk with visiting Royals that we met at the casino in Hobart, Tasmania and then went with them to a pub that opened well after closing because they were a family friend and we all proceeded to get completely drunk together. I avoided machine gun fire from marauding pirates on a moonless night. I consider myself lucky I did all this and more, and yet that feeling described by that lyric in the song is STRONG within me. I have tried to instill in my daughter and son who are now college age, "I know you feel like your whole life is in front of you, that you will live forever...but it goes fast. It goes SO fast. Once you hit your mid 20's the years just accelerate unbelievably. So get out there. Whatever you think you might want to reach for...don't worry about failing. Go to the ends of the Earth to follow your dreams. You can always come home if you stumble. You can always play it safe with life later." I hope they heed my advice.

My oldest child is 13 years old right now. Like all in our teen years, he's going through some changes, and thinking about how unfair life is. I told him it's ok to mess up, it's ok to fall down, but it is most important to get up even stronger every time and to learn our lessons through the tears sometimes. I told him, I want him "to go venture far beyond the shore and don't forsake this life of yours, I'll guide you home no matter where you are"...
Needless to say, it was a very wholesome moment, and a memory we'll both carry for the remainder of our lives

I cannot stop listening to this. I am the oldest of 3 children. And I am a 48 year old woman. My brother is 11 years younger than me. But I still remember & feel my own personal relationship to my dad. So many songs that I love are about father/son relationships. But as a woman…I have really become emotionally attached to this song. When I listen to it…I think about my whole family. I think about my grandpa…etc.
