Rick walked over to the front door and called Snickers, hoping his voice and sudden appearance might frighten the bears away. As soon as they heard his voice and saw him in the doorway, both bears dashed toward Rick in unison.
Even though he was experienced with grizzlies, Rick was terrified. He opened the front door and slammed it shut when the bears were within 5 feet of entering the house. The grizzlies paused and examined the doorway, possibly unsure of where Rick had disappeared.
On Rick’s property was a guest cabin, and his teenage daughter, whom we will call Jennifer, was inside. Her dog, Pippen, was cowering outside the door to the cabin, hoping to be let in before the grizzlies noticed him. Rick watched the grizzlies through windows and worked his way to an open one. He shouted to Jennifer to let Pippen into the cabin.
Jennifer opened the door while the bears were only 15 yards or so away. As soon as they saw the door open they dashed in unison toward her in the same manner they had pursued Rick. Jennifer slammed the door after letting Pippen inside, and the bears were only three feet from the door.
Now, Rick had made a decision previously that he was seriously regretting. He had several hunting rifles but had them stored in his father’s gun safe and out of reach of his children. Grandpa’s house was only a five-minute drive away but it might as well have been a million miles away. The only weapon he could find was a large kitchen knife, which granted him a modicum of confidence. Rick picked up the phone and dialed his father’s number hoping he would pick up quickly.
Rick’s father did pick up, and couldn’t believe the details he was listening to. I am sure he thought it may have been some kind of prank, but as soon as he was reassured it wasn’t, he grabbed his rifle and headed right over.
Now Rick’s father was a real bear hugger, if you will. He was probably the last person in town to want to hurt or kill a bear. As he drove over his mind raced with the dire straits his family was now facing.
As he waited he thought of Claudia Huber and Matthias Liniger. Only three years prior they had been besieged by a grizzly bear that chased them through their home and eventually attacked Claudia. The account of their details is on this channel and I have linked to it in the video article below for your review.
Rick watched the grizzlies tearing into the garbage bag just outside the door when he heard the horn of his father’s truck honking. For those of you impressed with the idea that loud noises could be used as a deterrent for bears, pay attention to the following events. He watched in dismay as the bears simply turned their heads and looked in Grandpa’s direction. They didn’t bolt as he had hoped and walked towards the honking truck.
Grandpa was still reluctant to kill the grizzlies. He poked his rifle from the window of his truck and fired a shot into the wood pile a few yards away from the bears. He hoped the loud noise would drive the bears off, but the grizzlies picked up their pace while they headed toward him.
Now knowing that these bears were not afraid of anything they should be, he drew down on the closest bear and fired. His bullet struck the bear in the chest and after only a few seconds, that bear died.
The second grizzly looked at Grandpa for a second, then glanced back at the dead grizzly. It laid down next to its partner and sniffed the dead bear between nervous mouthfuls of dandelions. After a minute or so, the uninjured bear slowly wandered off into the nearby forest.
Relief filled the family as they emerged from the house and the cabin. Grandpa didn’t want to shoot either of the grizzlies, let alone both of them, and expressed relief at the departure of the second bear.
After the departure of the officials, Rick departed for his father’s house, to retrieve his rifles. Within twenty minutes he had returned and began checking his firearms over to make sure they were operable and ready, just in case.
As he looked over his rifles, Rick’s children began screaming that the bear was back. He shuffled through the house and peered out of a window to locate the bear. He could see it only a few feet from the house so he packed his rifle out the front door.
As Rick rounded the corner, the grizzly turned and looked straight at him. It began to walk toward him with no hesitation and demonstrated an aggressive presence. This time Rick was not terrified. He was putting an end to this torment for once and for all. He aimed at the grizzly's chest and fired. The bear retreated a few yards, staggered a little then tipped over dead.

It's a bad thing when grizzlies are not afraid of humans

Mistake 1: being unarmed. Mistake 2: expecting bears to be predictable. Mistake 3: depending on someone else to defend your family

This is one of the reasons that it's so important not to feed wild animals. They get to be too comfortable with people, and some don't understand how dangerous these animals are. And they get way too comfortable with them as well.

Better to have a firearm and not need it then need it and not have it. Yikes!

You cannot underestimate any bears; or they will surprise you!!! They are too smart and determined. Thanks SBA Amazing story that could have ended a lot worse with these bears not being afraid and boldly coming to them, it’s a blessing this story did not turn out really bad!

Rethinking not having a gun in the house when you live in the wilderness is probably a good idea.

Lives in the middle of grizzly and black bear country, and stores his rifles somewhere else? Maybe invest $10.00 for a trigger lock if you don't think the safety of you family is worth the $200 for a gun safe.
Bears' actions appear to me to be the result of being habituated to being given food by people, and did not appear predatory. The old saying, 'a fed bear is a dead bear' is a reality. Too bad that many people are too stupid to understand this simple fact.

No way I'd live in Grizzly country without a high powered rifle NEAR BY!!!

They got lucky this time.

+1 for considering safe firearm storage.
-4 for stashing your weapons miles away instead of considering a simple trigger lock.

I love bears especially Grizzlies they are beautiful, powerful animals, but they are extremely dangerous & these guys did what they had to do.

I think their 1st mistake was thinking grizzlies are predictable.

Thanks! If I'd have to guess these were brothers feed or around people from a young age. Who ever feed them got them killed and put a family in danger. That's my guess but bears can be unpredictable. You're presentation does help with bear awareness for us. I do like the way you try to be respectful even if some almost bring it on themselves. Look forward to your real to life stories.

Had a large black bear come at my wife & myself hunting hogs.Four .12 guage slugs & too 30/30 rifle rounds stopped it within 15 feet of us after it had collapsed & slid another 8 feet or so towards us.The bear was in a dead run at us.Didn't think we would stop it

I believe this family was extremely fortunate! So many "what ifs". What if grandpa wasn't home? What if the door didn't stop them? As you said what if they were still outside? Thank God none of those things occurred! Thank you for an excellent video And all you do!!

The door handles they are showing are not meant for bear country. A bear can open that in a second.

Nestled between the valley of fresh spruce, Douglas fur and Red Alder…You hear that description and you’re in big danger

I grew up in the bush in the 1950's, we always had a really big dog or two that would run off the bear coming for the garbage, yep we had our own little dump across the yard, I never did actually see the bear, and Dad never even tried to shoot it, Rover never got hurt and he would harass the bear every time it came near until it left, usually quite quickly, everyone had guns and big usually free range dogs, and in twenty one years, the only bear encounter I had was when I was out without the dog. The trick I think is having a dog that will respect the bears potential for damage, won't run to hide behind you and will lead or drive the bear away from you, my boys loved playing tag with bears, never got hurt, never hurt the bears but kept them really uncomfortable around our home, it also helped that the only interactions with people was being hunted, which kept them fairly respectful of humans. I absolutely don't understand the mindset of idiots that feed the bears and habituate them to not respect humans, it does the animal no favours and likely causes it to be euthanized for public safety.

For some reason this story freaks me out more than meeting a bear in the wild. Something about the imaginary safety of the home and realizing that the bears can get inside if they really want to …
