The effects of climate change and the intensity of Australia's three-year drought have worsened the survival prospects of the native platypus. Scientists said there is an urgent need for a national risk assessment on whether platypuses should be downgraded to vulnerable, and to lay out conservation plans to minimise the risk of extinction.

Absolute garbage. There are plenty of platypus. They are not endangered let alone heading for extinction.
