You need to make sure the glass isn't tempered and you use a dimond drill bit with water to make the hole.

Drilling thru glass you need to keep the glasss cools by adding water, even if you use any drill bit and go slow

Sounds like you have the drill on rotary. I would imagine if you had a hole on the backing and took it off rotary. It seemed to go all the way until through. Thats when you have a blow out. The same thing happens when drilling through brick. The back end blows out. Drill till nearly through and take it off rotary. Have a bigger drill opening on the board or turn around.

Lubricate that thing submerged completely in water and drill slow to not break it if you want a clean hole
