Searching for happiness in an artificial world.

Books I'm Reading:

I think that deep down inside many people feel as if this constant push for complexity if harming humanity. As more time passes and more complex things are released, it is starting to become clear that simplicity is the only path to happiness. And it's the only path to happiness because it is natural and it's what our human brains can process. In this video, I share "4 Simple Human Needs To Achieve Happiness."

1. Satisfaction From Your Own Work

Complexity is often about making things easier whether that is through an app or a service. And although it is nice to bring easiness into our lives, it takes away the joy you get from accomplishing a task on your own. When you do your own work, you feel like a human that has value. As humans, we need satisfaction in our lives and when you choose to take the more difficult, simple path of doing things on your own, you end up living a happier life.

2. Mental Clarity

We are living in the decade of "Real Time," where we receive information or results very quickly and process them very quickly. I have come to learn that this complex world of real time information is not something we can learn or be accustomed to because our human brains can't process real time information. Our brains were designed to focus on a smaller amount of tasks because it brings you with more mental clarity. And when you choose the simple path of avoiding as much real time information in your life, you will have more mental clarity leading to a happier life.

3. The Right to Privacy

Due to advancements leading to a more complex world, we are quickly losing our privacy as AI becomes more sophisticated and can understand us better. When you choose to embrace these "smart" devices in bring them in your life, you are choosing to forfeit some of your privacy. And when you lose your privacy, it makes you feel violated and empty inside. When you instead choose to live with more basic, simple things, you protect your privacy and feel more autonomous, which leads to a happier life.

4. Deprivation

I believe that deprivation is a very important human need because it teaches us how to appreciate things in life. Often, complexity makes everything easy in your life and gives you what you want, when you want it, where you want it, which just leads to a dystopian world. It is important to not always take the easy path where you always have what you want and instead deprive yourself every now and then. Because when you deprive yourself, you end up living with more appreciation in life.

How do you find happiness through simplicity?

Simple joys yet very relaxing and satisfying:
-playing cards w a real deck of cards
-hanging clothes on clothesline outdoors
-ironing my clothes
-going to an ice cream shop (BR31, my fav) and sitting down enjoying an ice cream cone
-browsing the book shelves at my local public library

Slow and simple living soothes
my heart and soul.

Also, people are always told they must have a purpose. I think it's the opposite. Life having no purpose is a blessing. What's wrong with hanging out doing things you enjoy? If you're always seeking purpose but never find it, that only creates a sense of lack.

You are so right. My life has gotten more simple over time. I saved enough money so I didn’t have to work in my early 50’s. I find happiness in simple things. The weather is getting better now and it’s going to be 75 degrees this afternoon where I live so I cleaned the terrasse this morning so that we can have coffee outside this afternoon. Now I’m watching your video. The house is clean, the bills are paid, there is good food on the table. The bike ride will be a lot of fun later today. This is a simple life but so happy!

I hang my laundry on the line to dry; make my own bbq sauce, taco seasoning, chicken seasoning, and cleaning products. I get a great feeling from that. I save a lot of money, too. My socialization occurs when I go shopping. I understand what you're saying.

The world has become so complex & overwhelming😢😢 it gives me anxiety. Only way to survive in this era is to adopt simplicity.

Agree with this. I’m most happy when things are simple and I have time to focus on the most important things.

I find happiness through simplicity by limiting my time in stores. I grocery shop once a month. I'm on a low buy for the remainder of 2023 to pay off my debt. At first I felt deprived, but now I see how much time and money not shopping frees up. Better for Mother Earth, too! 🌍🌎🌏❤❤❤

Yet another great subject that is covered. I always recommend to sometimes stop to enjoy existing. I will take a good 30 minutes on the weekend to sit outside and enjoy the weather and nature in my backyard.

Totally agree with all 4 points. I gave up watching TV and the news several years ago and no longer worry about what is going on. I watch dvds I enjoy and listen to music that makes me happy. I do loathe the fact that if I buy online I get inundated with adverts of similar stuff I may like. I've even considered abandoning all electronics however this may be going to far in today's world 😅

Try and live like in the 1980s and 1990s before iPhones and smart phones were around.
***Literally - Switch your phone off for a day or leave it off in a cupboard *** I did it and I felt so free and not tied to messages and social media. I did not miss much

I was having a conversation with a coworker about these tech products that invade your privacy. It’s amazing how people are conditioned nowadays to be willing to give up all their privacy for some new gadget you really don’t need all for more convince in your life.

Well said
the more any of us go on the more complex it gets, and its getting to a point no one can make sense of anything, its like being on a treadmill, thank God i am 60yrs old and on my way to heaven.
I find it refreshing just going for a walk and listening to the birds sing, and looking at the beauty of nature, and getting away from things that drive me up the wall, especially incessant noise polution.

I'm trying, but it's hard to live simply in this high speed world. Thanks for the encouragement!

Simple is not a destination, but a beacon in a chaotic world.
