ELEGY is written on the theme of a well known and very old traditional song "Vehni, vehni fijolica" (ENG Wither, wither my Violet) from Croatian north from the region of Međimurje, between the town of Varaždin and river Mura, sung in a dialect.

CRO Lyrics:

Vehni, vehni fijolica, ne žalosti me,
ar te ftrči nemrem ja, vehni, grlica.
Zasadil sem ja tebe vu glubinu srdca,
ali vidim da drugi od dna te trga.

Zrasla si kak tulipan med već rožami;
al' da mi je vse zahman, jaj, navek meni.
Vehni, vehni grlica, kaj te ne trgam,
niti više svojemu srcu ne trebam.

Vidim glavu spušćenu, drugim na prsa;
žute lasi spušćene, jaj, do pojasa.
Ah, žalost me vumori, kada te vidim,
vre kad slatka vusta tva, više ne ljubim.

Nema žalost duši me, kak smrt kole me;
ovu žalost zabiti nikak ne morem.
Vehni, vehni grlica, kad mi se smeješ,
kada srce pri meni ti više nemaš.

ENG Translation:

Wither, wither my violet, dont make me sad,
I cannot pick you up, wither my dove.
I have planted you in the depth of my heart,
but now I see that somebody else picks you up from the bottom.

You have grown out as a tulip among many roses;
and now all is in vain, halas.
Wither, wither my dove, that I do not pick you up,
nor do I need you for my heart.

I see her head dropped to other's breast,
yellow hairs dropped until her waist.
Oh, sadness overwhelmed me, when I saw you,
when I do not kiss your sweet mouth any more.

Silent grief suffocates me, like death butchers me;
I can't beat this sadness.
Wither, wither my dove, when you laugh at me,
when you no longer have a heart with me.
