The present shape of Dubrovnik’s city walls goes back to the 13th century. They were systematically modernised and built until 1660. The last bulwark to be built was St. Stephen on the south side.
The walls are 1,940 meters long and consist of the main wall, sixteen towers, three forts, six bulwarks, two angular fortifications, three pre-walls with low turrets, three moats, two barbicans, two drawbridges and one breakwater.
