Slavery is a complicated issue, it's not acceptable in any way but it has happened across the world not just in the USA. Greece is held up as the cradle of Democracy, yet it had an economy built on slavery as was the Roman economy ... If we talk about slavery, we must also understand that slavery was not just an American evil, or a Western evil, it was accepted pretty much worldwide at certain times in history. Slavery is still happening in some parts of the world. This is a conversation well worth happening in a truthful manner.

As a Black man, this female hosts critique was infactual and frustrating. She is clueless. The African Dahomey Tribe sold their tribe and neighboring tribes into slavery. She needs to do her homework before speaking.

The fact that slavery was practiced in Africa and other regions is not disputed that I know of. The fact that some tribes sold people to Europeans from other tribes there were in conflict with (eg the tribe in The Woman King) is also not controversial. Saying there was wide spread selling of direct relatives in the same tribe is not being asserted by anyone who isn’t a kook.

I just read over the entire Florida's New Black History Curriculum and Kamala Harris is wrong. Page 6, bottom - Benchmark Clarifications Instructions Include how slaves developed skills, which in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit. (Talking about agriculture, painting, carpentry, tailoring, blacksmithing, etc.)

I live in the deep south and slavery was taught with all the ugliness that was involved but didn't exclude the few who despite the hardship rose above or found ways to work towards bettering themselves and the family. It was taught in a way that highlighted the constant struggles, defeats, etc but also their shear determination, faith, hope, and hard work never giving up to have a better life or improve others. Slavery is always WRONG but not educating the ways and hows people still found ways to improve their situation is also wrong. Self determination and educating their children to be the same is vital to one's potential success despite if they fail or not because without it they're guaranteed to fail.

There is no reason to treat the study of slavery in America any different than any other subject. This is pure emotion and politics.
