Henry VIII was born and raised as an incredibly devout Roman Catholic man.
But upon the death of his brother, the 11 year old Henry’s life is turned upside down. From this point onwards, the heavy burden of the succession would become his to bear. Despite being granted ‘Defender of the Faith’, Henry would soon turn the country upside down and change history forever on his personal quest to fulfil his desire to father a legitimate male heir. This path of Love and death would quickly lead to several failed marriages. It’s hard to discern the man from the myth. But it's easy to see that Henry VIII has become the most infamous English King, and is remembered half a millennium later for his romantic passion and his tyrannous rule.

I Always feel badly for the poor horses in wars and battles like this. They must be traumatized and sadden from what they see.

Not really off topic but has everyone seen the portrait of Anne of Cleeves? What a difference cleaning makes. I've always thought she was the luckiest of the six.

If you ask me Anne Of Cleaves got it the BEST 😂 he didn’t like her and sent her away with many properties while the other wives are brutally murdered or die from lack of care after child birth

“He is unable to execute her, as she is protected by her powerful family”. There is zero evidence and is highly unlikely that this even crossed Henry’s mind about Katherine of Aragon. Anne was pregnant before they were married, not a few months later

Henry was well educated and learned. No fool. The fall during the joust changed him and the years without the longed for heir embittered him

I believe that Pope Clement took the belt and braces approach and actually issued 2 dispensations, 1st one saying that since Katherine had vehemently declared she was still a virgin the marriage could go ahead and the 2nd one saying, the marriage could take place even if her marriage to Arthur had been consummated.
Henry's legacy (Money) from Henry 7th which was as stated a fortune but he had spent it all in just over 5 years.

These Tudor era documentaries never become trite. Always interesting.

He called Henry 8ths story "Bombastic", lmfao. I could only envision him singing the Shaggy song "Mr. Bombastic" while having snuggles with Jane Seymour after cutting off the head of the woman (Anne Boleyn, of course) he separated from the Catholic Church for? Yes... Its totes Bombastic! 🧨💥❤️‍🔥🎇

Good documentary as a whole. However, some of the costumes shown were anachronistic, such as the ruffs, which appeared in fashion many decades later.

By the time Prince Arthur died, Henry VII and his wife Elizabeth of York only had 3 children left, not six. 2 of them were girls

Does anyone else think that the documentary scenes being used don't match the narrator?

Henry VIII was larger than life but had many moral deficits including pride. Henry let his quest for an heir cloud his judgement in his less than honorable treatment of his wives. Elizabeth I was meant to rule. She and her sister Mary were just useless pawns that proved very valuable in the end. It's auite easy to see trainwrecks after they happen so we can't be too harsh about Henry's flaws.

For a channel with serious historians, there sure are a lot of errors.
