Nikita started learning Kathak dance as a teenager with Surdashan Dheer and Indu Moudgil in Slough. By the age of 18 she became serious about dance and decided to embark on a journey to India, to learn the art form in its motherland. She studied for 10 consecutive years with Shila Mehta in Mumbai, culminating with a Rangmanch Pravesh (debut dance recital) at Bhavan centre, London in 2012. She then went onto study Kathak with Padmashree Guru Pratap Pawar for a further 3 years and completed ALL of the ISTD Exams.

In June 2015, Nikita Thakrar performed a solo Kathak production, with live accompaniment for her 30th Birthday, at the Nehru Centre in London. Filming and editing of the show, by Suman Ruprai.
