Interesting. Thanks for the lesson! I remember years back in school my English teacher told me I can't use "You're fired!" or "I was fired..." in this context. She said it was a translation error because in German you say "Sie sind gefeuert!". I had to use "you're sacked" in class to get full points in the exams. Anytime I heard "you're fired" in movies I thought "must be an American thing then". To hear you use it made me laugh out loud!
