If the Anti heat screen had more space in between the armour, then it would be more effective. But maybe it can stop big HE shells. Can you test that next.

i think its protection was intended against hand held shaped charge(heat) weapons, for example Panzerfaust or Panzerschreck.

there's an IS-2 with that "anti heat" protection, but the protection is more separated from the armor than the t-34E one, u should try it

I think people seem to forget that HEAT does exist semi-commonly in low tiers. It's just not used at all. I'm pretty sure quite a lot of the Panzers and Stugs have a HEAT shell. They suck, so these bed frames would probably actually work against them noticably.

Unfortunately though in reality this was probably meant more for infantry AT launchers than tank fired HEAT.

Whenever I test stuff like this I try to use shells that have similar pen values to what it would be facing, so for example I was looking at the M48 which would’ve encountered RPGs in Vietnam, and I think the LeKPz’s HEAT shell had more or less the same pen, so I used it

Tanknology has a good primer on 'statistical armor' and how these sorts of screens are supposed to work by crushing the fusing in PG-7s and the HEAT-FS shell of tanks. The extra stand-off distance makes little to no difference on penetration, HEAT shells are normally not set to their optimal stand-off range as it's usually longer than the practical length for the round.

It seems to work well vs the common size of LAT (low-ish pin and 75 to the low 100s in size), and lowered the dmg of the mid size heat rounds as long as they had sub 200mm pin, All and all I say it worked.

Most tank heat warhead actually benefit from those spaced plate as the focus point of the jet in normal use is way behind the armor it pens, to have it work you need the spaced armor to be nearly 1m away from the tank

Not surprising. The Panzer IV H has far better spacing with its skirts yet even that won't protect against the PT-76.

To stop HEAT round such sort of "screens" must be much thicker than mesh of an old bed. It kinda works then - the metallic cone gets smashed with solid sticks and cannot make the torrent of quazi-liquid metal - penetrator of HEAT effect itself (cumulation in rus. terminology, or the "кумулятивная струя" [cu-mu-lya-tiv-na-ya / stru-ya] as it widely known in ru-net).

For example... American researches found that Pz IV H shielded turret gets penetrated by faustpatron straight through: the screen, 2 layers of turret side armour and then next layer of screen from other turret's side (200 mm of HEAT pen is enough).

In theory the cumulated torrent (HEAT penetrator) can ricochet. Some labs even managed to get this scenario, but IRL HEAT warheads are way too strong to let penetrator to leave like this. Because medium speed of the cumulation "torrent" is about ~8000 meters per second nearby the head and slows down to ~2000 about the tail.

(that's why HEAT penetrator is called some sort of "spray/torrent/jet/flow" in Russian ["струя"] + some special HEATs are called the "beating ball" [rus. "ударное ядро"] due to different shape of cumulation cone and the penetrator as result)

Well, we can't expect a lot for some beds weld to the tank. It works a little bit.

Cages only decrease pen, not stop it from happening. Since t34 armor is around 80-60mm (if i remember correctly) it's obvious that pen of HEAT shell should be ~100mm or less for armor to widstand it
