Which fraction is greater? 1/2 or 5/8

In order to determine which is bigger, 1/2 or 5/8, we can visually compare the two fractions. If we divide a circle into two pieces, and another into eight, we can compare and see that 5/8 is larger than 1/2.

We could also divide 1 by 2 to get 0.50. Then we divide 5 by 8 and we get 0.63 . This also allows us to see that 5/8 is a larger fraction than 1/2.

The benefit of using a calculator to change the fraction to a decimal (or you could do it by hand) is that it works on fractions that are similar. For example, 4/11 and 5/12.

Either way, the fraction 5/8 is greater than the fraction 1/2.

It's amazing to think our maths teachers couldn't explain this so clearly. I wish you had been my maths teacher years ago.l used to dread maths lessons as a kid as the teacher was so scary if you got the answer wrong! Anyway, in later life, l did get the GCSE maths after much revision so it shows it can be achieved.

excuse me, sir, you are wrong, the correct answer for 5/8 is equal to 0.625, not 5/8=0.63, can you please check your answer
