Philippines' Marcos dynasty: Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is 'certainly banking on the legacy of his father'

Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the namesake son of an ousted dictator, praised his father's legacy and glossed over its violent past as he was sworn in as Philippine president after a stunning election victory that opponents say was pulled off by whitewashing his family’s image. His rise to power, 36 years after an army-backed “People Power” revolt booted his father from office and into global infamy, upends politics in the Asian democracy, where a public holiday, monuments and the Philippine Constitution stand as reminders of the end of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s tyrannical rule. For more analysis on Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s stunning rise to power, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Sol Iglesias, Author and Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines. "He is really portraying himself, not just as a continuity figure," explains Dr. Iglesias, "but very much that myth of a golden age that he's hitching his wagon to when it comes to his father's brutal dictatorship."

I didn't vote BBM, but I don't understand why international media doesn't like to interview the laypeople so that they could better understand why the Marcoses are now back in power. If we talk about history, it should not only focus on Marcos and Duterte's leadership. The Aquino leadership had something to do with why BBM won the presidency, contrary to their understanding that Filipinos had already forgotten the atrocities of the late President Marcos. During President Nonoy Aquino's term, the railway system was at the peak of its bad reputation. Many Filipinos like me witnessed the inefficiency of our trains because they used to malfunction. Even NAIA was dubbed the "World's worst airport" because of issues like "tanim bala", and in that term, there were a lot of blunders like the Quirino hostage crisis, Typhoon Haiyan, and SAF44.

Bias. You should be fair with your guest. It should be in both camps. Trying to paint that the man the Filipino choose is not the right one. West is trying to meddle in our country as always.

Indications that Marcos will be a better president than Duterte.
- I'll judge him not by his past, but by what he'll be doing to *protect Philippines 🇷🇺 sovereignty* against Chinese expansionism.
