macOS Catalina Review

I’ve already done the deep technical dive on macOS Catalina (10.15). You can find 11 thousand words and a full hour of video on that linked below. What I want to do here, now, is talk about the implementation and the experience.

Not how it works, which is chock full of really smart, really cool technology, but how well it works for the humans at the other end of the machine.

I love how some developers and companies are claiming that Catalina only running 64-bit clean Apps caught them off guard. Right,  has been openly telegraphing this move for at least two years. No sympathies from me.

The main reason for me: Sidecar. I was planning to buy a Cintiq but this solved my problem.

One thing I noticed that they took out, for some odd reason.
Find My Friends extension for the side bar.

I think the “biting off more than they can chew” phrase is pretty accurate.

Apple had a tall order for the several massive application, security and device harmonization updates.

Catalina is ambitious and I agree with Rene, things will get ironed out over time.

It’s not easy to have limited resources and be able to produce at this scale... software developers and designers are worth their weight in gold because of the demands involved.

The marzipan apps fail to show how you can create a great mac app from iOS. They need some more polish. Can't wait to see what a good dev will do.

To pre-check for 64-bit apps (3:10), instead of scrolling through the list of apps, just click the "64-bit..." label in the table header and the entire list will sort by that field, "No" values at the top (because "N" < "Y").

I downloaded it last night and like it so far. Also it was smart to put everything separately now, you are more likely to click on something like Apple TV now than you were before which I suspect is the major motivation for this split.

The "32-bit apps deserve to die" is a terrible take. For an example, working in audio, there are still a ton of old 32-bit processor and instrument plugins that are not and can not be maintained, having their developers gone or sources lost. Yet, people still rely on these plugins, with no possibility to replace them. Not supporting and embracing legacy support is out right offensive to many in practice, and it's the main thing the Microsoft for once actually gets right.

Did a clean install of Catalina. Restored my data from my backup. Music didn’t bring my playlists over and a lot of my album art (which was there in Mojave) was missing.
I reinstalled Mojave

Oct. 2019 I've upgraded to Catalina from Mojave on my late 2012 Mac mini, and experienced no bugs. So I decided to do a clean or fresh install of Catalina on another SSD as my fresh install of Catalina, and I have experienced no bugs since the launch day of Catalina. I use an external SATA SSD to USB 3 as my macOS drive and I experience no slow downs of Catalina just like I have never experienced a problem using an external SSD as my macOS drive since a few years past now. I use an external SSD as my macOS drive because the internal 5400rpm mechanical hard drive crashed. I don't trust myself to take apart my late 2012 Mac mini and install an internal SSD so I use an external solution.

I wish there was a touch version of OS X so I could actually replace a laptop with an iPad. There’s just a few things I can’t do on an iPad that likely won’t ever change that I can’t get over.
