A Longford Legend
A Collection of Irish Street Ballades
By Robert Sheldon
Item: 00-18243
Series: Alfred Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 4
Another outstanding composition by Robert Sheldon, "A Longford Legend" is destined to become a classic! It was commissioned by the Normal Community West High School Band, Normal, Illinois and is based on three poems found in a collection of Irish Street Ballades. Written in three movements, "A Longford Legend" is a tribute to the wonderful band literature of Grainger, Holst, and Vaughan Williams. "A Longford Legend" is a magnificent showpiece for every instrument in the band—a must for your next concert! This title is available in SmartMusic.

He conducted it for our concert and explained what each movement was based on and it helped to convey that through the music. For those wondering the first piece is about a retired veteran who purchases a ship to let the town like him more and invites them all on this voyage around the lake however the conflict is that no one truly know how to stop the ship thus leading them to forever be going in circles on that lake. The second movement is about a hunter and his love who recently were to be married however when caught hunting in a snowstorm outside he painfully mistakes his wife for a deer and shoots, killing his love and accepting his fate. The third and final movement is about a farmer who is married to a woman who is the embodiment of hell on earth and so he pleads for the devil to take her with him but she causes such distress with the devil that he returns back to the farmer. The poems that the music is based on are really enjoyable. I'm glad I was able to hear Sheldon's take on the pieces.

Fun fact: Sheldon was the director at our school for 12 years. He started our current directors senior year and quit when he started making bank from writing. He came back this year for one day to work on this with us 😄

I remember first playing this my sophomore year of high school. And then playing it at my last concert of high school my senior year. This will always be one of my favorite band pieces just because of my nostalgia

i love when the oboe will be following the flute and clarinet and then there will be a a 16th note run, so they will just give the oboe the melody cause it's easier
GIVE ME THE HARD PART YOU WON'T. NO BALLS

I believe I played this my junior year of high school as one of two tuba players at the time, and the dark March near the end is absolutely S-tier, but played down an octave gives it a little bit of that extra turbo, that pizzazz, that special sauce.
