The Edmund Fitzgerald was scheduled to go in for repairs after after it completed the trip that it sunk on. There were Summer time and Winter time weight limits on the amount of cargo a ship could carry on the Great Lakes. Winter storms cause high winds and huge waves. Ships would carry less weight in the Winter, so the ships would sit higher above the water, to help keep waves off the deck. These Winter lesser weight limits for ship went into effect October 1st. But the company that owned the Edmund Fitzgerald asked the Coast Guard for permission to run their ship to run at Summer weight levels for rhe 2st time ever that year. The Coast Guard allowed them to use the Summer weight limits. So the ship was over loaded weight when it sank. The Coast Guard made the company go back to the Winter weight limits the day after the ship sank. The paper maps the ship had were from the 1920s and inaccurate, so trying to navigate if the equipment went out was impossible in the storm. The Coast Guard had sent all their Michigan search and rescue vehicles in for service at the same time and the near Coast Guard search and rescue vehicle was over a day away in Wisconsin. Plus the ship had been repaired several times in the same area and it may have becune its Achilles heel. Greed led to the over loading of the boat. The Coast Guard wasn't going to implicate itself has contributing to the sinking. If it had been scheduled to be repaired befire that trip rather than after. So many if onkys.

I remember the night the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. I live in Cleveland Ohio and it was storming very bad. A windy cold night with heavy rain. I was around 9 years old. I will never forget it.

Gordon Lightfoots song about the Edmund Fitzgerald helped to bring attention to the dangers of shipping in general. But most of all the shipping on the lakes. The fact he was willing to admit what he got wrong and quickly changed it shows the great character of the man. I might be bias, because it is 1 of my favorite songs. And this tragedy happened 13months before I was even born.

I suggest some reading about the Midcontinent Rift. You'll learn better information about volcanic activities in Lake Superior.

The Kamloops gets shipwrecked right next to an island and there is a search party looking for three weeks and no one ever thinks to search the island?!?!?! Wouldn't that be the first place you would look? I know they didn't know the exact location of the ship but they did know the last reported position and they knew it was in close proximity to the island.

Little know fact: The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was not the longest ship on the Lakes. Her sister ship the Arthur B Homer was one foot longer. 😊
