UN condemns Lebanon device blasts as a violation of international law

“International humanitarian law prohibits the use of booby-trap devices in the form of apparently harmless portable objects."
On Friday, the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, denounced the detonation of hand-held devices used by Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon, saying the attack violated international law and could constitute a war crime.
Lebanon has been rocked this week by an Israeli attack targeting Hezbollah that turned communication devices into bombs, leaving dozens dead and injuring thousands more.
As is its policy, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its alleged involvement in the attacks.

Article 6 of the 1980 Protocol II to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons provides:

1. Without prejudice to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict relating to treachery and perfidy, it is prohibited in all circumstances to use any booby-trap in the form of an apparently harmless portable object which is specifically designed and constructed to contain explosive material and to detonate when it is disturbed or approached.

2. It is prohibited in all circumstances to use any booby-trap which is designed to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering.
