President Trump defends sacking of FBI chief James Comey

US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to sack FBI director James Comey, saying Democrats and Republicans will thank him for it.

The White House said on Wednesday that Comey was fired over his handling of an inquiry into leaked e-mails from Hillary Clinton's campaign.

But Comey had also been leading an investigation into possible Russian collusion in last year's US presidential election.

Trump needed to shut down the investigation into members of his campaign and staff colluding with the Russians as soon as possible. Sessions couldn't recommend the firing of Comey because he had earlier recused himself from being involved in the investigation. So that "duty" fell to the new assistant AG who fulfilled it in short order after being appointed to his office. Now Trump can fill Comey's vacancy with a new Director who will ensure that the investigation comes to no conclusion. That's why a Special Prosecutor must be appointed to investigate this matter fully.
