When I go for a MTB ride, 3:22/km is perfectly fine pace, on a bike! geeez, you all run so fast!

Yesterday, I ran my first marathon. The London marathon 2024. I had an injury that meant I could only do 8 weeks’ training. Really appreciated your message here. I felt really disappointed with my 4hrs 40 time. I’ve run half marathons in 1.50. But must remember that it’s an accomplishment to finish in itself. And I didn’t completely ‘bonk’, even though I cannot walk today!!! Thanks Philly. You are the best!!

For me this was right up there, arguably one of your very best videos ever. I love LOVE it when you get into your race craft, your mentality, your desire and goals. Elite altheles rarely can speak to the average, and you excel at this Phily 💪💪🙏🙏

Congrats on 10th, and thanks for the break down. Although we're very different runners, I can relate to your disappointment when you saw the clock tick over 72:00. At Farnborough this year I broke 90 minues for the first time, but on the watch on route I was sure I was on for 1:28:xx and when I eventually came in at 1:29:15 instead of being over the moon with a massive PB I would never have dreamed of a year ago, I was really annoyed! It's weird how runner's brain works, clutching defeat from the jaws of victory eh?!

Anyhoo, it's been great to see you push on and improve over the last year, and I find your positivity and honest appraisals of your races really inspirational. Keep up the good work!

Hello Phily, I'm from Brazil and I'm loving your content, I'm an athlete and this weekend I have a half marathon, which I would really like to run in 1h22 - 1h23, your content has helped me a lot, especially to control anxiety and nervousness before the test, keep up your incredible work! I'm rooting for you here in Brazil

You hit it directly, when you say "time not important, only position important" ("Fifth Element" inspired).
As I get older it's been hard to force myself in to that transition, getting a different mindset.
I still fail at it, much to often 😀
It would help if more races had clear age-grouping...
I had a race this spring where I came in as no. 72 (! sigh...) and I got so totally depressed, because I wanted to be among the first 30 or at least 50 runners.
And then discovered I was a very clear winner of my agegroup by more than three minutes.
But I still want to compete as much as I can with you younger runners, more than half my age 😀
As an amateur I do not have sponsors pushing for results and exposure but can 100% got for "run for fun, race for fun".
But we all know, that running is more important than life 😉

I had a 10 mile race yesterday and got so overstimulated by all the people I had to slow down significantly. But I didn't stop and finished it and I'm so proud of myself. I didn't get my goal time but I achieved something either way

Heard a nice one after my HM yesterday:
The pain will go away, but pride about your race stays… 😊

Sitting here in my "Love the Grind" T-shirt, loving you talk about loving the grind! It's amazing what a boost others can have on you isn't it. Thanks for sharing these thoughts with us, and mega congratulations - I'm so proud of you! ✌💪🤩

I can totally relate to the bed head😂! As a former gymnast and now a gymnastic coach, one of the things I like about running is it's not subjectively judged by others. Your place is your place, and your time is your time. Learning to race is an art form ! (By the way, Mr. MOOSE was my favorite on Captain Kangaroo!)

The time vs. placing factor is very interesting!
Take Boston marathon for example. For most people it won't be a PB course - it's all about a race strategy that allows the best placing.
I find that way more fascinating than just running for a time/PB

Thanks for the break down of your race, that's super interesting and you make it relatable even though I could barely keep up with you on a bike.
I'm not really competitive but I've noticed how little things can cloud over things I could be proud of or happy about. For my next race ( a 20k), my goal is to do a tough race. I always run too conservatively because I'm afraid of going too hard and blow up. So yeah my aim is to trust myself a bit more and go hard. Not sure I'll be able to to it, we shall see. All the best and thank you for your awesome channel!

I love the saying: don’t let perfect get in the way of progression

Racing without a watch or with a tape on your watch can be a good idea to learn to RACE the people around without focusing on time. Thats how we did it 20 years ago and we’d be faster or slower depending on how the race around us went. Time mattered but not as much, we would also do Pb’s without focusing on doing them 😂, not to mention how we would learn to listen to our bodies a lot more. Lovely video Phily

I could probably break my PRs on a treadmill because all my races have been hilly, but I don’t do that because time is not more important than enjoying the act of racing! I’m really happy to hear you talking about that, I don’t hear anyone else doing it.

To many people TIME is everything & I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I battled for years to get a sub 18 5k. It was this target time that got me out In the dark, the rain, the snow. Got me down the gym, changing my diet, buying best shoes, quitting alcohol & getting enough sleep. Yes It was an arbitrary time but my quest for It was what motivated me.
5k Pb - 17.47.

The three hour target for the marathon is an interesting one. Watch Tim Grose's statistical analysis. Those who succeeded in getting sub 3, in general ran positive splits, but with less than two mins difference between first and second half, whereas those failing to go sub 3, often collapsed majorly near the end (so bigger positive splits), when they realised they would not get the sub 3 goal. It shows the power of the same target, to positively influence some, and negatively influence others, depending on which side of the line they fell under.
