The Incredible Resurgence of Raphinha

In early 2024, calls were being made for Barcelona to sell their €60million player, Raphinha to make room for Euro 2024 winner, Nico Williams. Nico reject signing for Barca and so, the club decided to keep the Brazilian. 17 goals and 10 assists later, Raphinha has become one of Barcelona’s best players, striking up a front three partnership with Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski, in a team that has scored over 40 goals in less than 15 league matches. He has bagged two hattricks so far this season; one in their 7-0 victory over Real Valladolid, and in arguably his finest showing of the season, against multi time champions league winners and Bundesliga powerhouse, Bayern Munich.
This is impressive from a player whose future at the club wasn’t even certain a few months ago. A player, who was mostly beginning to resemble a €60 million waste of money, has now become one of Barcelona’s best players this season. This is the incredible resurgence of Raphinha.

Simple, He is a hard working, down to earth person and he just needed right role and some time to start performing and Hansi Flick understood what were his strengths and changed his role from what was expected from him. He was expected to be a dribbler, cut inside kinda player but he excelles in making runs, passing, quick touches and work ethic.

Idk why people wanted him sold and to replace him with Nico. He was arguably our best player last season in crucial games. Flick profiled him way before he took over and knew where to play him because he instantly got so much better. Props to him too, he ignored the criticisms and took matter in his own hands.

His fundamentals improved (First touch, passing, 1-2s, finishing, etc) and the team is setup up around using his strengths (speed and finishing), so now he has a real chance to shine like never before.

The playing style changed. Raphinha works best in a system that exploits space and allows him to make runs etc, something that the Xavi system didn't really do

0:01 what happened is, he is no longer TRAPPED OUT ON THE WING which is what Xavi was doing. I kept saying over and over that Raphinha is NOT A WINGER, he NEEDS to have FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT. I guess Xavi did not see this during his time at Leeds. He is like a Messi, obviously not on Messi level, but similar in how they play. Start on right but can drift inside. But this freedom of movement Flick has given Raphinha it doesn't matter where you play him now in the attack. Xavi realized when it was already too late both for Raph & team.
