My dad told me about one such event. He was a WW2 Marine CWO. His job was aircraft maintenance. While at San Diego, the training cycle was at a fairly fevered pitch. Practice jumps from C-47's were an every day event.
One day, a guy jumped, but his chute snagged the horizontal stabilizer of the airplane. He was out of reach of anyone in the C-47, and the turbulence behind the aircraft was such that the guy had no means to help himself. They circled the airfield for quite awhile trying to come up with a solution. Finally, they told the pilots to just land, but two guys hopped into a two-seat open cockpit airplane to try to save this guy.
The plan was for the pilot to fly under the chutist and the backseat guy to cut the shroud lines with a knife and pull this poor guy into the airplane. They managed to get underneath him, but as they got close to him, the snagged jumper bear-hugged the back seat guy totally immobilizing him. The pilot saw the precarious place they were in but had the wits about him to pull the aircraft's nose up and let the propeller cut the shroud lines.
That was one happy guy to be back on the ground.
