Indonesia Upholds iPhone 16 Ban Despite Apple's $1 Billion Investment Pledge | Firstpost Spotlight
Indonesia is at odds with the US tech giant Apple. The Indonesian authorities upheld a ban on selling Apple’s iPhone 16, claiming that the company did not follow the country’s domestic content rule. Smartphones sold in Indonesia should have locally-made parts. Apple's executives flew to Jakarta to negotiate the ban with the Indonesian government. The Indonesian industry minister held two days of meetings with Apple's vice president of global government affairs. Apple proposed a deal to build a $1 billion local production facility in Indonesia's Batam Island for its tracking device AirTag. The Indonesian industry minister said, the proposed deal doesn’t satisfy the country's conditions for a locally-made iPhone part, as AirTag is just an accessory. The Indonesian authorities first banned the iPhone 16's sale in October 2024. Watch the video for more.
