Indonesia Upholds iPhone 16 Ban Despite Apple's $1 Billion Investment Pledge | Firstpost Spotlight

Indonesia is at odds with the US tech giant Apple. The Indonesian authorities upheld a ban on selling Apple’s iPhone 16, claiming that the company did not follow the country’s domestic content rule. Smartphones sold in Indonesia should have locally-made parts. Apple's executives flew to Jakarta to negotiate the ban with the Indonesian government. The Indonesian industry minister held two days of meetings with Apple's vice president of global government affairs. Apple proposed a deal to build a $1 billion local production facility in Indonesia's Batam Island for its tracking device AirTag. The Indonesian industry minister said, the proposed deal doesn’t satisfy the country's conditions for a locally-made iPhone part, as AirTag is just an accessory. The Indonesian authorities first banned the iPhone 16's sale in October 2024. Watch the video for more.

In Indonesia is copying India to increase local business or local manufacturing, but with more strictness than India

Apple should take this as an opportunity to take a direct manufacturing presence in Indonesia as its current distributor is ruining the product. For example: 1) Apple products are 20-40% higher in price than in other nearby countries 2) the distributor is slow to launch products giving an edge to competitors 3) the distributor is only paying minum wage or UMR which Apple should consider as ‘slave wages’ as its only $1-2 per hour… Apple should plan to launch manufacturing centers and wholly owned retail centers and they will see they sales increase by 100%

Apple must pay off its debt to Indonesia. The manufacturing development commitment was canceled and still has debt to Indonesia. What kind of company has such a commitment but no independence.

Indonesia is very bad country for foreign investment, its better for Multi National Company to invest in Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, since the cost of investment lowers, and better investment term & condition there.
