I live in Florida, so I'm pretty sure that I would need at the very least, a 6 foot lag bolt to have a chance of it working. Although sometimes we hit clay at or near the surface, but usually just sand.

Been awhile since I used a brace like that. Used to pound the stake in the opposite direction to make up for the slack in the diameter of the hole in the plate. As tight as the dirt is don’t need to drive the stake all the way. Not like if your holding concrete.

rotorhammer, 5/8 or 3/4 bit, pilot hole in the dirt is faster. great for places like Montana or Seattle wa. nothing but clay after a certain depth

put a 16D nail in the stake and it holds the turnbuckle. itll hold trust me lol. we used them on 30ft tall 8 inch retaining walls. heavy af. so itll definitely hold lol
