VELES WALK - PITIJADA 2022

Veles is a city in the central part of Macedonia on the Vardar river. The city of Veles is the seat of Veles Municipality.
Under Turkish rule it became a township (kaza) called Köprülü in the Üsküp sanjak (one of the administrative divisions of the Ottoman Empire). From 1877 to 1912 the sandjak was part of the Kosovo vilayet. It played an important part in Ottoman history, as it was where six Grand Viziers hailed, and is still known as Köprülü in Turkish. In Albanian it is known as Qyprill, for the same reason as the Turkish variant.
From 1929 to 1941, Veles was part of the Vardar Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After World War II, the city was known as Titov Veles after Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito, but the 'Titov' was removed in 1996.[2] Cars registered in Veles were identified by the code TV (Titov Veles), which was changed as late as 2000 to VE.
The written document that the Municipality of Veles has for the pastrami pie as an autochthonous product dates from 1869 and is located in the Constantinople archives. The same records indicate that at that time 150,000 okas of domestic wine were produced in Veles per year. That's why even today pie and wine do not go together.
In honor of pies and wine, a festival of pies and wine "Veleška pitijada 2022" is being held in Veles for the twelfth time. The people of Veles are proud of their pastrami pies and there is no Veles family, regardless of where they are on the globe, regardless of age, that does not know how to prepare a pastrami pie and does not enjoy eating it. That is also the real reason that this specialty has been maintained for centuries.
