As a poet, writer, English teacher, and blacksmith, I found this to be the best video yet.

My Father worked for the Tennessee and Ohio RR in Erwin TN. He had a beautiful anvil that he worked on all his life that was cut way to short at 62. I’m now 61 and I rue the day that our family let that anvil get away. When I see my earthly father in heaven I’m going to tell him how wise he was while trying to raise me and my brothers right and he’s going to remind me that I should have never let that anvil go! God bless Mr. Poe.

Thank you EC. Mail time always brings interesting things. Your sticker collection is building and now you have picture of a home made Burke bar. I love the poem.

I very recently got in too big of a rush and left my 15 year old stiletto hammer on a job site. I hope it goes to good use and service for its next owner...it served me well and I'll always miss it... My "anvil".

We get a lot of tools donated to our Men's Shed from the families of carpenters, joiners and other tradesmen who've gone on.

I use an 1891 pein hammer, set square and mortice gauge pretty much daily. They've been cleaned and restored but still carry their owners names, stamped into the wood. These are my Poe's Anvils and I respect the tradesmen who used them over the past hundred years or more.

I have a crescent wrench, 8 inch, that was used on who knows what, but the owner saw it worthwhile to engrave his name onto the end. He must have done so sometime long ago before the estate sale his widowed wife was running from their home. A little riverside house with a weathered dock out front, a pocket of tree-shaded tranquility. It was the sort of place you would never know was there. A right and a left turn and the bustle of a main road had died down to suburban quiet, and then the pavement gave way to a dirt track bordered by thick, wild foliage with the feeling of having travelled for weeks instead of minutes. I'll never know who he was, what he did or why exactly the tool was so special to him, but when I need a wrench I find myself always drawn to first grabbing the one labelled "MAX."

Every time I see one of these videos, I rack my brains trying to think of something meaningful to send. Maybe one of these days, something will come to mind. In the meantime, thanks for the videos!

I have a number of old multi-make Motors manuals, the kind that were common in garages in the past. When I see the notes scribbled, names signed, and greasy thumbprints on the pages, I feel a connection with the mechanics who used these books four, five, or six decades ago to get cars repaired. All of us turning to these pages for the same answers.

Although I don't work on cars anymore, I found myself packing them to move across country, knowing that I want them to go to new stewards who will understand them for what they are.

There is an event called the ultimate yard sale here in southern Maine in September, I will be looking for my own "Poe's anvil".
