China is celebrating its first major national holiday since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, as tourists are eager to travel head out on domestic trips while international movements remain restricted. Large crowds converged at popular tourist spots in Shanghai, giving local businesses a much-needed boost. In some areas, crowds grew so large that police had to put crowd-control measures in place.

As a Japanese person living in Shanghai, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the city this busy since like 2012. Shanghai Station had so much railway traffic this Golden Week, I thought I was in Shinjuku station. Maybe people should go visit the other parts of China, like rural areas, Shanghai is not everything. Hainan is very pretty, Sichuan is super scenic and Harbin and that whole north area of China has lots of modern history.
