Go ahead has become common in speech when doing a tutorial or explaining how to do something. For example; now you can go ahead and open the menu, then go ahead and choose the second item.
Another example is; I went to the store and went ahead and purchased some cans of dog food. In so many similar cases, go ahead can be totally left out and nothing changes in the meaning. The English language is full of expressions that are use because they become popular for some unknown reason. Expressions like "without further ado", "at the end of the day" and many more. Some of them really bug me like the use of the word basically. Basically I speak English quite well. Then we have my favorite unfavorite word; awesome. In the old days awesome meant incredible or fantastic or stupendous. Then it became a synonym for any word that meant good. The word good was no longer in our daily speech. No more good, better, best, only awesome. So now when someone declares something to be awesome you have no clue how good they think it is. You only know that they think it isn't bad. We no longer care about knowing how others really feel about anything. If you want to tell someone that you think something is great, using awesome doesn't do it. You must use fantastic or stupendous or something similar. Even though awesome used to be better than all those other adjectives, it was demoted to being a synonym for the lowly word; good.
