Cirith Ungol sehen viele als Miterfinder des US-amerikanischen Heavy Metal. Sie gehörten zu den ersten Bands, die Epic bzw. Doom Metal spielten. Lange war es still um sie. Nach einer fast 25-jährigen Pause starteten die kalifornischen Ur-Metaller 2015 wieder.
Die Gründungsmitglieder von Cirith Ungol hatten bereits als High School-Band zusammen gespielt. 1972 reformierten sie sich unter dem heute bekannten Namen, den sie dem Buch „Der Herr der Ringe“ entnommen hatten. Cirith Ungol bedeutet so viel wie „Pass der Spinne“, in der deutschen Fassung von J.R.R. Tolkiens Fantasy-Weltbestseller ist der Ort als „Kankras Lauer“ übersetzt.
Die Kalifornier machten zunächst klassischen Rock, wurden dann aber immer metallischer. Sie gehörten zu den ersten Bands, die Epic bzw. Doom Metal spielten. Ihr erstes Album „Frost And Fire“ kam bereits 1980 heraus. Die Band war zwar innerhalb der Szene bekannt und tourte mit Slayer und Venom, war aber beim größeren Publikum in der ersten Phase ihres Bestehens nicht wirklich erfolgreich. Erst später wurde sie Kult, woraufhin sich das deutsche Label Metal Blade ihrer annahm, ihre Alben erneut veröffentlichte sowie bis dato unveröffentlichte Tracks herausbrachte. 2015 feierten sie ihr Comeback beim Frost & Fire II Musikfestival in Ventura, Kalifornien. Seitdem touren Cirith Ungol erfolgreich durch Europa und die USA.

Can you guys believe that i discovered Cirith Ungol through a famous brazilian magazine called Super Interesante (or Super Interessant, in english).

The magazine called these guys the "worst band ever." When i listened to them, i couldn't believe, and until today this report seems hard to believe. This band is amazing! We, fans of metal, have no idea how much shit is talked about our style of music worldwide.

Long live, Cirith Ungol! And fuck "SuperInteressante", the WORST magazine in the world.

Few things warm my heart like finding out bands like Cirith Ungol are finally getting their dues and being more respected by people. Major respect to these guys for enduring the trials of being overlooked in their early days, but quality will always prevail.
