Has anyone debated re-classing Northern Ireland as an external British territory, and allowing them to retain/request membership of the EU or EU Customs Union separately from mainland UK? They do already have their own government and other apparatus already, and could be financially and culturally supported by the mainland. Like NZ in the 19th century. This would maintain the status quo.
Perhaps it's outside the scope of the timeframe, or as an outsider I'm missing something obvious, but I'm surprised that there has not been any discussion in this direction.
