Used Motorcycle Rehab - Delkevic 9' vs 18' Muffler - SV650 Episode 14

I'm ashamed to admit that I actually shot a video about this, and lost the footage, but in this episode, we'll revisit the replacement muffler that I installed on our project SV650.

Originally, the bike came to us with a very short, very loud, 9" Delkevic straight-through muffler, which looked and sounded pretty cool, but was unbearably loud (for me, anyway) in actual use. To address this, I swapped it out with an 18" version, which Delkevic's customer service reps told me is the quietest one they make.

It definitely is quieter, which was the important thing to me, although credit where it's due, I think the 9" sounds better.

If you aren't wearing earplugs, the wind is damaging your hearing regardless of muffler choice.

It's crazy how big of a difference it made! When I had my gs500 I got the 9 inch Delkevic exhaust and it was stupid loud. I ended up going back to stock because I couldn't stand how loud it was.

I am running the 18" can on an XSR700. I got a decibel meter app for my phone and measured the sound of my 18" can with the quiet core in it, about 24" and 45° from the end, getting a reading of 87 dB at idle and 96 dB at around 5000-6000 rpm sustained free rev sitting still. It was virtually perfect. I had ordered the "quieter core" in case I wanted quieter. But the 18" can is totally acceptable in almost all circumstances, including leaving home at 6:00 am in the morning.

Also no irritating drone when riding down the highway at sustained 5000 rpm. I contacted Delkevic to confirm no ECU reflash needed too.

I appreciate you taking the time to make this video; it's definitely very helpful. I really like that you placed the mic inside of the helmet!

Very helpful, informative sir. And your hearing is more important than the muffler choice on your bike. I have a 14" Delk on my '22 KLR Adventure. It is a lovely sound, especially the droning going down the highway. Ride safe!

Thanks for making this video, just what I was looking for. I am presently fitting the 18'' high level Delkevic, but it is quite long and fouls the number plate. I considered swapping it for the 9'' one, but after watching your video I have decided to stick with the 18'' job and will make it fit.

18 sounds throatier, better. 9 sounds tinny.

I agree 100% - the quieter the better ... loud pipes may claim to save lives, but they are horrible for anything else.

Gr8 vid, comparison, ear plugs are essential. The shorter one produces a cool deep sound but the longer one is better for regular riding. I put a used OEM BMW stock header on my 250cc scooter and it provides a quite but deep sound that is just enough to hear at low speed and sounds cool without being loud and that is all that is really needed.

Do you noticeable performance difference? Low vs high rpm power?
And differences Fuel Economy ?

I think the 18" muffler is suppose to be mated to a shorter mid pipe? Either way showcased quite a difference in sound level. Sound is similar but overall db lower.

they do make a 14 inch version as well maybe that would be perfect

I wear ear plugs and went with the ds70 because I could not hear what the engine was doing otherwise.

Good video mate,
I am deciding between 9 and the 14 inch version as the 18" be to long for my liking on the suzuki dl650 but I do have concerns about 14" being too load and its rated db 98 to 100 sound although it is within the allowable range here in new zealand. so what are your taughts between the 18 and 14" model? Cheers

Did you have to cut your pipe to put on the pipe initially?

you could have saved money and just put the DB KILLER in the 9" oval. i took mine out.
