The BEBOP + ALTERED + BLUES PRO Improv concept. What the f*** is that?

In this video I am very excited about sharing an improvisational concept with you that
I call BAB (BEBOP ALTERED BLUES)

For years I studied and immersed myself in these 3 musical Genres/Concepts (however you want to label them!)
- For Bebop I studied and listened to Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown and a zillion others!
- Players that inspired me to go deeper in to altered scale sounds were Mike Brecker, John scofield and Freddie Hubbard (to name a few)
-And for Blues I loved listening and transcribing players like Stanley Turrentine, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Hodges.

However I always thought of these different styles and ideas as separate entities.
It never occurred to me to mix the 3 sounds together consciously, that is not
until a few months ago when I was developing Module 8 of the
FOUNDATIONAL SOUL SCALE IMPROVISATIONAL course.

I hope you enjoy the sounds!

I find that, "you go to the theory" but "creativity comes to you". Master classes indeed!

Killer lines Nick! A challenge to have them under your fingers. They make you hear sounds that otherwise would remain undiscovered to the hears. This is awesome. Thanks!!!

Nick your lines flow like Charlie Parker in tunes such as Just Friends or I Remember You. Mentally intriguing and also aesthetically beautiful.

Please offer guitar tabs on all your lessons. I know it takes a while to complete that task but for those of us who do not read notation ... we would benefit further with your teachings.

Mr. Holmes, That was very interesting. Very advanced, but interesting BECAUSE my ears were able to hear the different styles. I'm sure I can't speak that language, but I'm at least able to understand? (recognize) what language it is I'm hearing. That's a step in the right direction, but it should tell you how narrow your audience really is, too. Just how it is.

I think you should play sax lines in Bb. Concert pitch for guitars and pianos. It's hard enough, then have to transpose

Maybe you should transcribe more solos or learn to sing (improvise) your own solos. Although the concepts are interesting a lot of those excersises sound rather boring and unmusical. No point playing something you wouldn't have sung in that moment (wouldn't have been able to sing). A good excersise is to take a jazz-standard and sing the root-notes without any backing track. Then arpeggiate (sing) the chords, always starting on the root and than start to only hear the root in your head and start your phrases on any chordtone over it (including tensions) and soon (it may take months or years, depending on the level, but relatively soon) you have the whole chord-progression in your head und you can actually sing all the ideas and connect the chords in musically meaningful way. Once you have this voice in your head you can translate it back to your instrument and it will make more musical sense. A very useful excersise to audiate at least two notes (the root and the chord tone you want to sing over it) at once is to play a random note on a piano, trying to replicate the sound in your head, then imagine to sing that note without making a sound. And then trying to audiate another note over it very clearly, hearing both notes at once in your head and then singing the note. One should try to imagine the note so clearly that you only have to open your mouth and give it a sound, not bending it to the right note. And you should be able to imagine the whole phrase before singing it.
