This video is not meant to brag- instead I want it to be inspiration that you can do it to! And also open up the world of opportunities for making money through non-traditional sources of income. I'm also trying to be transparent with this channel as much as possible. I want to thank you guys for your support and give you a behind the scenes of what my creator studio actually shows.
There are a bunch of different ways creators are paid on YouTube:
First up is Google Adsense.
Adsense is the platform that YouTube ads are run on - you know those annoying ads that show up before videos (and sometimes during or at the end as well)? These ads are paid by companies, and the revenue is split between YouTube and the creator. YouTube will pay me 55% of this ad revenue, and it goes directly into my adsense account.
This is the most direct way to make money on YouTube. Your videos are literally generating traffic, and of course traffic allows ads to be placed. Most YouTubers with at least 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time will have signed up for this program, but the amount of money it brings in can vary drastically across channels.
It really depends on CPM (cost per mille) which is based on the topic of the channel and video content. Higher paying categories include personal finance, investing, stocks, etc. Lower paying categories are like gaming, pranks, music, etc.
That is why channels with 100,000 subscribers are making a huge range of incomes.
Next up is Affiliate marketing.
This is when you place affiliate links in the description of your videos, and when people click on those links and make a purchase, you get a percentage of the revenue. This is the most hands off way of making money on YouTube. You put links to relevant brands and services, and get a small portion of revenue.
Lots of people do very well with affiliate marketing and it can definitely be a huge source of income. I know lots of people making over 10k per month - the hardest part of affiliate marketing is selecting which companies to work with and also generating traffic.
Third is sponsorships and brand deals.
These are likely the highest income generator for lots of YouTube channels. Particularly channels with low CPM's but tons of views. For example, I don't think David Dobrik's channel has a high CPM. But he gets millions of views per month and as a result companies pay him insane amounts of money to place an integrated ad or have a shoutout on one of his videos. He has paid for so many of his friends' cars using this income source!
When you work directly with a brand, both parties win. You get paid a good sum of money, and the company gets exposure at a lower cost than if they were to place an ad on TV or other method. This is a way of making money that I have yet to fully explore, but I know the potential is there.
There are other ways of making money, but these are generally the biggest - I hope you guys find this video interesting. I know that seeing what other people make with non traditional sources of income always inspired me to get up and take action, so I hope this can do the same for you!
